Important Information:
Course: Dessert or Bread
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 60 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 65 minutes
Servings: 12 large donuts or 14 medium
Prepping:
· Gather all your ingredients and donut-making tools.
· Pre-measure your ingredients.
· Heat your oil to 320 to 340 degrees Fahrenheit
Ingredients: This recipe consists of traditional baking ingredients. For this delicious donut recipe, you will need:
· 2 ½ tsp dry yeast
· ½ cup warm water
· ¼ cup sugar
· ¼ cup evaporated milk
· ½ tsp salt
· ¼ cup vegetable shortening
· 2 large eggs
· ½ tsp vanilla
· 2 ½ to 3 cups flour
· 1 qt oil for frying
Glaze:
· 2 cups sugar
· 2/3 stick of butter
· 4 tbsp evaporated milk
· 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions:
1. For this recipe, gather all your dry ingredients and sift them into your mixer bowl.
2. Then, begin to add all your wet ingredients.
3. With a spatula, gently fold the ingredients together, including the room temperature shortening. It will eliminate the splatter of flour.
4. Once most of the wet ingredients have been incorporated, turn the mixer to a low-medium speed for 2 1/2 minutes.
5. Take the dough and place it on the counter and knead it until it all comes together. It should take about 2 minutes.
6. Put the dough in a large glass bowl, cover it, and allow it to rise for about 90 minutes.
7. Place the dough on a clean and smooth counter surface and roll out the dough to about ½ inch. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle some flour on the surface.
8. Use a donut cutter to cut out your donuts and donut holes.
9. Cover the donuts once they have been cut and allow them to rise for another 20 minutes.
10. At this time, preheat your oil. I used canola oil, but you can use vegetables.
11. Then begin to prepare your glaze by mixing your ingredients and whisking them lightly. Your glaze will be semi-thick; make sure to thin it out to your liking.
12. Begin frying the donuts for about 1 ½ minutes on each side or until your donuts have reached a golden brown color. It will depend on how hot your oil is.
13. Glaze them and place them on parchment paper to set.
Topper Tips:
1. Use warm water. It helps the yeast and allows the dough to come together better.
2. The shortening will make the donuts lighter and soft.
3. Make sure the bowl glazing is big enough to fit a few donuts at the same time.
4. Glaze your donuts while they are still warm. You do not want your glaze to clump.
